If you are studying at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi — or planning to apply for its BBA, BS, MBA or MS programs — understanding the IBA Karachi grading system is one of the most practical things you can do for your academic career. Your grades at IBA are not just marks on a transcript. They decide whether you stay on the rolls of the institute, whether you land on the Dean's List, whether you qualify for a gold medal at convocation, and how competitive your profile looks for jobs and foreign universities.
This guide explains the official IBA Karachi grade scale on the 4.0 system, how semester GPA and CGPA are computed (with two fully worked numeric examples), the difference between absolute and relative grading at IBA, the probation and dismissal rules that can end a student's enrollment, the improvement-of-grades policy, the Dean's List and gold medal criteria, and how IBA's approach compares with other Pakistani business schools. Every grade band, threshold and rule below is taken from IBA's own official documents — primarily the Academic Policy Manual 2013–2014 published on IBA's official website — and anything that could not be verified is flagged as such.
What Is the IBA Karachi Grading System? An Overview
IBA Karachi uses a letter-grade system on a 4.0 scale. Every course you take is awarded a letter grade — A, A−, B+, B, B−, C+, C, C− or F — and each letter grade carries a fixed number of grade points from 4.00 down to 0.00. Your semester GPA (SGPA) and cumulative GPA (CGPA) are weighted averages of these grade points, with each course weighted by its credit hours.
The current fixed grading plan was adopted by IBA's Academic Board at its 50th meeting on March 12, 2010, and took effect from the spring 2010 semester for all IBA programs. The manual's fixed table is the official IBA grading plan, but your instructor's disclosed plan for a specific course is what actually governs that course.
Grading at IBA is continuous. Your final course grade is not decided by one exam alone — term examinations, surprise quizzes, class discussions, written assignments, research reports, presentations and a final examination all count. In determining a course grade, 60% of the final grade is based on semester work and 40% on the semester final examination, though the institute reserves the right to modify these weights.
IBA Karachi Grading System: The Official Grade Table
The table below is the official IBA grading plan, exactly as published in the Academic Policy Manual:
| Letter Grade | Percentage Range | Grade Points | What It Means for Your GPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 93–100 | 4.00 | Excellent — the maximum grade point |
| A− | 87–92 | 3.67 | Very strong — costs 0.33 points per credit versus an A |
| B+ | 82–86 | 3.33 | Good — the most common grade among strong students |
| B | 77–81 | 3.00 | Satisfactory — exactly the 3.0 line many employers watch |
| B− | 72–76 | 2.67 | Below average for IBA — pulls CGPA toward the danger zone |
| C+ | 68–71 | 2.33 | Weak — a C+ or lower disqualifies you from gold medal consideration |
| C | 64–67 | 2.00 | Minimum acceptable — exactly the 2.0 survival line |
| C− | 60–63 | 1.67 | Passing but dangerous — drags CGPA below the required 2.2 |
| F | 0–59 | 0.00 | Fail — zero grade points; the course must be repeated |
| I | — | — | Incomplete — when a student cannot complete course requirements |
| W | — | — | Withdrawn — under IBA's withdrawal policy |
The pass line is 60%: anything below 60 is an F. The bands are tight at the top — the difference between an A (4.00) and an A− (3.67) is just a few percentage points. There is no D grade and no A+ in the official IBA plan. If any website shows you a different IBA table — for example, one with a D grade or an A+ — it is not the official IBA plan.
Relative vs Absolute Grading at IBA Karachi
Absolute grading means your letter grade is decided by the fixed percentage bands above: score 88, get an A−; score 84, get a B+.
Relative grading (grading on a curve) means your letter grade depends on your rank in the class. In the MBA program's typical relative matrix: approximately the top 10% to 20% receive A or A−, 60% to 75% receive B+ or B, 10% to 20% receive B−, C+, C or C−, and about 0% to 10% end up with F. Relative grading is not applied in classes of 30 or fewer students. The faculty member must disclose the grading plan — relative or absolute — in the course outline at the beginning of the semester.
- Read every course outline on day one. That paragraph tells you whether you're competing against a fixed target or your classmates.
- In a relative-graded class, the class average is your real target. Beating the class average by a clear margin pushes you into A territory.
- In an absolute-graded class, every mark is bankable. A 92.5 is an A− and a 93 is an A — fixed and knowable in advance.

How to Calculate IBA Karachi GPA: SGPA and CGPA, Step by Step
CGPA = Sum of (credit hours × grade points) ÷ Sum of credit hours
- List every course with credit hours and letter grade.
- Convert each grade to grade points (A=4.00, A−=3.67, B+=3.33, etc.).
- Multiply credit hours × grade points = quality points.
- Add all quality points; add all credit hours.
- Divide total quality points by total credit hours.
Worked Example 1: One Semester's SGPA
Microeconomics 3cr B+ (3.33) = 9.99; Business Math 3cr A− (3.67) = 11.01; Financial Accounting 3cr B (3.00) = 9.00; Org Behavior 3cr A (4.00) = 12.00; Pak History 2cr B− (2.67) = 5.34; Business Comm 3cr C+ (2.33) = 6.99. Total = 54.33 quality points over 17 credit hours. SGPA = 3.20.
Use our IBA GPA Calculator — it applies this exact official scale.
Worked Example 2: CGPA Across Two Semesters
Semester 2 (18cr): 57.00 quality points → SGPA 3.17. CGPA = (54.33 + 57.00) ÷ (17 + 18) = 111.33 ÷ 35 = 3.18. Always weight by credit hours — never simply average SGPAs.
IBA Karachi Academic Standing: Probation and Dismissal Rules
The 2.2 rule: IBA's good-standing line
A student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.2 on a cumulative basis throughout their stay at IBA — stricter than the 2.0 floor at most Pakistani universities.
Probation: CGPA between 2.0 and 2.2
Put on probation for one semester. Full-time students must reach 2.2 in the chronologically following semester — no semester break allowed. Below 2.2 after first probation → second probation; below 2.2 after second → dropped from the rolls.
Dismissal: CGPA below 2.0
Any student with a GPA of less than 2.0 is dropped from the rolls — no probation step. This is the single most important number: fall below 2.0 cumulative and your IBA enrollment ends.
First-semester special rule
For Morning Program students, the first-semester CGPA for probation decisions is calculated on the first six courses completed (F grades count; W and I don't). There's an early-exit clause: if even maximum grades in remaining courses can't lift you to the threshold, you're dropped in the first semester itself.
Repeating a Course: IBA's Improvement of Grades Policy
- Better of two attempts counts — no averaging. If the repeat goes worse, the old grade stands.
- An F can be fully replaced — the new grade replaces the F without it counting in the CGPA.
- Repeating disqualifies you from honors — no Gold Medal nominations, no Dean's List.
- Repeats are charged an additional course fee.

IBA Karachi Dean's List and Gold Medal Honors
Dean's List with Distinction
Students with an academic semester average of 90% or more earn "Dean's List with Distinction" — expressed as a percentage average, not a GPA cutoff. Any repeated course disqualifies you.
Gold, silver and bronze medals: BBA/BS overall
- All credit courses count; highest CGPA with no failures wins gold — provided CGPA ≥ 3.5.
- A C+ or lower in any subject disqualifies you entirely.
- Ties broken by higher average percentage; no award without sufficient merit.
MBA (Morning) medals
Top three assessed on 2nd, 3rd and 4th semester CGPA only, with no C grade in the 18 MBA courses.
Specialization gold medals
Minimum two electives in the specialization with A in both; no C+ in the field, no failures in relevant semesters.
IBA vs Other Business Schools
IBA vs LUMS: LUMS publishes NO official percentage bands (relative grading per its Student Handbook 2025–2026); IBA publishes a complete fixed table while allowing faculty to choose per course.
IBA vs typical 4.0 universities: IBA's 2.2 good-standing floor is a full step stricter than the usual 2.0. The 2.0–2.2 band that's "safe" elsewhere is probation at IBA.

12 Practical Tips for IBA Students
- Read the course outline's grading paragraph first. Relative or absolute determines your whole strategy.
- Front-load effort in 3-4 credit core courses. A 3-credit A = 12 quality points; a 3-credit C+ = 6.99.
- Never ignore quizzes. 60% of the grade is semester work — the final can't save a neglected semester.
- Guard the 2.2 line, not 2.0. Set your personal floor at 2.5.
- Recompute projections mid-semester with the 60/40 split using the Grade Calculator.
- Use repeats surgically — but never casually if honors are your goal.
- Protect attendance — max 5 absences (full-time); exceeding it bars you from the final.
- Chase A−/B+ boundaries — a 2-mark swing can move a full grade step. Re-check costs Rs. 5,000 (refundable if your grade changes).
- Plan probation semesters around the exact SGPA you need.
- Keep every graded component until final grades post.
- Think in CGPA, not SGPA — consistency across semesters is the game. Track with the IBA GPA Calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum CGPA to stay at IBA Karachi?
2.2 cumulative. Between 2.0–2.2 = probation; below 2.0 = immediate dismissal.
How is CGPA calculated at IBA?
CGPA = Σ (credit hours × grade points) ÷ Σ (credit hours), using official points (A=4.00 … F=0.00).
What percentage is an A at IBA?
93–100% under the fixed plan (A− = 87–92%). In relative-graded courses, grade depends on class rank.
Can I repeat a course to improve my grade?
Yes — better of two attempts counts, no averaging; F fully replaced. But repeats disqualify you from the Dean's List and gold medals.
What is the Dean's List criterion?
Semester average of 90%+ earns "Dean's List with Distinction." Repeaters are ineligible.
What CGPA for a gold medal?
Highest CGPA with no failures, CGPA ≥ 3.5, no grade of C+ or lower in any subject.
Note: core rules from IBA's official Academic Policy Manual; always confirm time-sensitive decisions with the IBA Examination Department.
